Yesterday my little princess asked me if I was "new" or "old." Grandpa got her started by telling her she was new and he was old. He is helping her understand the concept that the world is full of differences. It is easy to understand this is a new toy and that is an old toy. Young and old is still pretty abstract for her. She is just beginning to understand differences. It is fascinating to watch her learning.
Maybe being old gives you a different perspective about the future. But I have always felt that the children and the future were what really counted, what really mattered. This feeling has probably helped the human race survive all this time. For me it is just part of the maternal instinct.
I used to worry about the children and future and then President Clinton came to office. For eight years I was filled with joy as I watched and listened to the greatest president this country has ever had talk about and then built a bright future for the children, for all of us.
But now I worry about the future on a much different level. I worry in terms of people being able to live on the earth and the future of our democracy. If you ask me where I am from I will tell you "USTA" (Used to be America). It is hard to get your mind around what is happening. It is all coming so fast and all at the same time. The science fiction books I have read are becoming or have become reality.
But I do take heart because we have so many heroes out there fighting for us. Henry Waxman is certainly one, Al Gore, Seymour Hersh, the hosts on Air America, and Salon, it is a very long list.
Each of us has to become a hero in our own way. It does not matter what you do or how small the effort, just do it. Together all the efforts will matter and will make a difference.
I am going to host my 4th Anti-War vigil on Monday. I am doing it through
MoveOn It makes me sad that I still have to be doing this. I marched in New York twice and it was incredible. Everyone who marched put their heart and soul into trying to stop the war before it started. I tried as did the millions of other people around the world. I get discouraged but Tony says we have to keep believing we can change what is happening.
So today I encourage anyone who reads this to march, host or attend a vigil, write letters, call congress, talk with people.
WE CAN NO LONGER IGNORE WHAT IS HAPPENING - WE ALL HAVE TO GET INVOLVED!!!
PS We have temporarily removed the comments. We are working on a nicer looking solution.
