Yes it's Tony's birthday today. We've celebrated almost 40 of these birthdays together. My hope is that this will be a best birthday ever.
This image was taken down in the Wall Street area shortly after 9/11. We've both worked on Wall Street for the major brokerages and banks. We've had lunch together in many of the buildings some of which have fallen down. We were drawn like magnets back to the Wall Street area to see what had happened as soon as they were letting people get close.
This is yet another example of the Tony Karp's genius. He's taken a very ordinary image and made something extraordinary. It was almost dark. The big light in the center was one of the many flood lights that had been set up so that people could work around the clock.
One day this might be one of Tony's most famous images. He has captured a defining moment in the history of America. The truck was carry rubble and all this could have been the beginning of our greatest time in America, instead it has turned out to be our worst time.
A headline in one of papers reads "Partisanship prevails in Congress, while U.S. problems go unsolved". This is why I feel we no longer have a government. Yes they are all there getting paid, have pensions and health care for life. They have jobs waiting for them that will pay even more money when they leave office. No wonder they do what big business wants and to hell with government for the people, by the people and of the people.
America still has it brains but we have lost our courage. We are afraid to speak out, to get out on the streets, to march, to protest for our rights. We are so busy being polite. Why are people calling me and telling me to call my congressman to ask him to do the right thing. He doesn't care what I think. He only does what the money and power tell him to do.
I have faith that the essence of what made this country great, still lives in enough of us. That the good people who normally obey the rules will see that there is something very wrong. That the good people will realize that we have the power to make it right. We have to make our voices heard. We have to stop being invisible to the world.
I love you Tony Karp and you may be getting older but you are still getting better. Your art continues to grow. Your work is spectacular. My present to you this year is a bigger and better marketing campaign, bigger and better exhibits and more reviews. I am going to make you really famous.
Happy Birthday Dearest Best Friend and Brilliant Artist!!
