It is a glorious spring and we are surrounded by flowers, lush grass and trees in full glory. But the power lines loom in the background. We seem to be winning but … it ain't over till the fat lady sings.
The local electrical utility is building a new sub-station around the corner and a little ways down the road from us. Here in the country where you rarely even hear someone talking, a major construction project like this is big doings. Going down to watch the construction is an adventure. (It is interesting how your life can change and how easily you can adjust to a totally different kind of reality. This is on the other end of the spectrum from living in the cement canyons of New York.) Actually we go because it presents the possibility of new images and we have never seen a sub-station being built before.
When we moved here to our little piece of heaven in northern Virginia we knew there would be something to do with electricity built on that site. And it just a sub-station but it makes us nervous because we are afraid it will be part of the network for the huge transmission line they want to build across Virginia. One possible route would be at a quarter of a mile from us and would be visible from our back field. It would be horrendous.
Our side in this battle is doing very, very well. Bravo to the Piedmont Environmental Council and everyone who is working so hard on this.
However, I am still afraid that even though we have logic and reason and the facts on our side we are up against a sea of corruption that boggles the mind. Here is what we said in the first
Power to the people … sort of post.
