About this image
This image was taken in a Marshall, Virginia. It is a small little town about 20 miles from Haymarket where we live.
This clock was sitting on the porch of an antique shop that we passed. It is one of those places where you have to use your eyes and look into every little nook and cranny. There are several civil war historic markers in the town.
From my perspective, this picture is full of symbolism. I think Virginia is once again going to be a battleground. It was a red state, but it is turning blue.
Musings of a muse
Today is election day here in Virginia. We're voting for county and state office. I feel that voting is useless.
The corruption at all levels of government is so vast that I am hard pressed to feel we have a government at all. How can this be America when we deny children healthcare? Has anyone considered that children, yes children will die because they can't get healthcare.
What one sees here in Virginia is the strategy of the right wing machine. They have pushed real hard on immigration but it seems to have been pulled back a little bit. Somebody must have told them that there are lots of very successful immigrants living and working here in northern Virginia. Then there are people like me who are children of immigrants. This is hatred pure and simple.
My grandmother Rebecca who I love dearly and who I still miss very much, left her aging parents, traveled in steerage on a boat from Russia to come to a country where she did not speak the language and marry a man she had not seen for four years. She came to have a better life.
She did have a wonderful life here. My mother Lillian her child, had an even better life and mine has been spectacular up until recently. I made it in America on my wits. I had no money and I never finished college. But I had opportunity. What is driving me crazy is that I see that opportunity disappearing. The corruption is stealing all the money. What food that you buy in the supermarket this week that contains e-coli. Of yes it was the ground beef.
Tony has faith in America and I have been reading what a number of articulate and well reasoned people are saying. The message is don't give up, stand up for our democracy. So I will put away my disgust yet once again.
We still have some freedom. My ability to write and publish what I think is a great example of it. And so I will vote today. But I feel it's time to make a new game, one were we make the rules.
I am desperately looking for some leadership. Unfortunately I don't see or hear any.
