I usually display Tony's finished work. It's the result of many interactions and perhaps a thousand tweaks, images processed with different and varied tools. But today I thought I'd provide a view of a work in progress. Share with you what I see when I sit beside Tony and he shows me the result of his latest endeavor.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art had a contest where they had people send in images that they'd taken at the Met. This got Tony looking for all the images he'd taken at there. For years we spent most Sunday's at the Met, exploring the latest exhibit and when we'd seen the latest one, investigating the many fabulous sections of the museum. Tony has many, many images from these wonderful explorations. He's posted a whole bunch on Art and Zen of the Design.
Take a look. One of these images caught his eye and he has started working on it after not touching it since 2003. The style/theme of this series/etude is what Tony calls
Patternism. View the picture close-up and then move back. It's made up of sub-patterns that taken together make the image.
Sometimes when I watch Tony work it is an though he's working with a virtual piece of clay. He sees the image in his mind's eye but it does not quite appear on the screen. Occasionally he will print an image hoping that it will help him see how to make it "pop". It is amazing to watch him work. He has incredible patience and concentration. Attributes he acquired as a master programmer and systems designer. He's not found what he is looking for and so he is continuing to play with this one. Stay tuned.
