Artists are driven by many things. For Tony Karp it’s his desire to make as much art as possible and to have as many people as possible see the art.
This book,
When in Rome . . . An Artist’s Journey
is his latest art work. It’s the future of artistic publishing. It redefines what’s possible in an art book.
The book is modeled after a physical book. You can turn the pages, go to the index pages, or view the table of contents. You can flip through the book or you can have it turn the pages automatically for you. You can even turn the titles of the pictures on and off. One special feature of the book is a back button for retracing all your steps. A second feature is the Behind the Scenes pages featuring some insight as to how the images were created. There's a link to them from the contents page or you can find them by simply going through the book.
Everything that’s been described is available on the interface that Tony calls the “Bookbar” at the bottom of every page. Click the buttons to see what they do. It’s very easy.
This book has a “live index.” Clicking on the image on the index page takes you directly to the page. Click on an item on the Contents page and you’ll be on that page. The map gives you the context of where in Italy the images were created.
Some important notes
This book is meant to be viewed in Adobe Reader's "Full Screen" mode for the best viewing experience, and it will try to open in this mode. You will see a warning notice from Adobe reader that the document wants to open in full screen mode. This is normal. Just click the "Yes" button. If you check the check box asking to remember this document, you won't see the warning again.
When you click on the picture to download the book, you will get a dialog box asking whether you want to Open the document or Save the file. Choose "Save" if you want to have a copy to view whenever you want.
To utilize all of the features in this book, you should be using the latest version of Adobe Reader. You can get it here:
