This is your great grandmother, Marilyn. Your mother, Carina, is my granddaughter and I am writing to you in December of 2009.
Your mother is only six years old as I write. It's a critical time in the history of the world. We've finally realized that global warming is a real threat. I wanted you to know that your ancestors cared about the environment and we realized that the decisions we are making in 2009 will have a huge impact on your lives.
Your grandparents Cathy and Scott are very environmentally conscious. And Carina probably knows more about the environment and how to protect it than many of the grownups that I know. It is sad that the generations that caused much of the troubles you are facing were so unaware or even worse choose to believe that the planet was not at risk.
A little background for you. Your great grandfather Tony Karp and I have been together for 40 years. That's a long time and it has all been a wonderful adventure. Great grandpa Tony loves your mother Carina more than anything in the world. I feel the same way.
Tony is an artist and these "posts" as they are called will contain an image that he has created. He started an art movement called
Techno-Impressionism. Perhaps by the time you read this he has become famous. In 2009 he was only famous locally in Virginia where we live.
I used to use write about Tony's art and explain what the picture was all about. Occasionally I would rant about what was happening.
I now feel that it's more important to leave a history of what happened before you were born, in the hope that it will give you a better understanding of your family's history. I knew little about my family; most of the knowledge I have came from stories my mother and grandmother told me.
My hope is that somehow this content will be preserved so that you can retrieve it. In today's world more and more we find information by searching for it. I can't begin to imagine what kind of incredible access you will have.
The image you are looking at are icicles that formed on the roof in the front of our house here in Haymarket, Virginia. Tony shot this through our bedroom window. It was an incredibly beautiful sight. The sunlight was literally dancing. We had a very big snowfall and this was but one of the many fabulous things we saw when we looked out.
We lived in New York City most of our lives. We moved here when your mother Carina was born. It was one of the best things we've ever done. Watching her grow up is a most joyous and wondrous experience. Look for more. Today's date is Thursday, December 24th, 2009. (Just in case searching by date helps.)
